Who We Are
Eric lived a life of inspiration for 35 years. He was a happy, smart and funny person, who drew people to him by his caring smile and kind personality. Eric graduated from Scotia-Glenville Schools and had hoped to attend University of Michigan, however, complications abated this plan. Instead, he attended HVCC until his illnesses caused him to stop, at which time he began writing a sports trivia book, as well as helping with community-minded activities.
Eric was a huge sports fan, particularly dedicated to the NY Giants and Yankees. His dedication to his favored teams caused some entertaining rivalries within our family! He was a living sports encyclopedia, and also a music and motorcycle resource guide! Despite his many medical difficulties, Eric truly never complained. He was the definition of patience and saw the good in everyone. He was able to take one's worries away just through his sense of humor or his infectious smile.
SBA of NYS was formed in 1993 by a small group of local parents whose children were born with Spina Bifida. One of these loving parents was Eric's mother, Helen Eggenberger. Since then, the organization has grown, now serving over 200 families, including adults with Spina Bifida, young children and their parents, spouses and grandparents. The current Board of Directors contains parents of affected children, adults with Spina Bifida, and community members.
In 2023, the SBA of NYS named an award after Eric: The Eric Crow Trailblazer Award
Spina Bifida (SB) is the most common neural tube birth defect in the United States and occurs when the neural tube does not completely develop or close as it should, by the 28th day after conception. Spina Bifida affects about 1,500 to 2,000 babies each year in the USA.
There has been a worldwide decline of Spina Bifida largely due to the fortification of folic acid in many common foods, as the increased intake of folic acid has dropped SB incidence by 35 percent. People with SB may have a range of complications from minor to severe depending on a variety of medical issues.
